How do I register a domain name?

You can register a domain name through any registrar such as NetRegistry, GoDaddy or even Google. You’ll need to pay a registration fee (usually annually but sometimes every 2 years) to secure your domain registration. This gives you the right to the domain name for that period.

Check the availability of your domain name

You’ll need to check to see if your chosen domain is available for registration. You can use the WHOIS service to check availability, or simply type in your chosen domain name into a registrar’s Search field to check. If your chosen domain is already taken you may need to consider alternatives eg. acronyms, or variations of your business name.

Domain Extensions – what’s available?

There are different types of domain names – some have special requirements, others are less strict. Here’s a brief rundown of the most common types:-

com.au
For Australian businesses and companies – most Aussie businesses use this domain extension.

net.au
For commercial entities – commonly used by IT companies.

org.au
For charities and not-for-profit organisations – strict rules apply.

asn.au
For non-commercial bodies – sporting clubs, trade unions, political parties, etc.

Check the auDA (Australian Domain Name Administrator) website for their policy on eligibility and allocation for domain names.

Register your domain name

You can visit the auDA website for a list of accredited domain registrars. Choose one that suits you and follow their registration instructions on their website. Charges and terms will vary between domain providers, so make sure you know what you’re signing up for.

A lot of domain registrars will offer the option of hosting – make sure you only buy what you need.
